A man has been taken to hospital after being hit by a vehicle at a major junction in Liverpool city centre this morning. Hunter Street eastbound, heading towards Everton, is closed after a male pedestrian was struck at around 6.05am on Wednesday, October 14.
The driver stopped at the scene, and the man has been taken to hospital to be assessed. A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "Hunter Street is currently closed eastbound and drivers can expect delays, so please avoid the area where possible."
Police cordon and traffic impact
Pictures taken by the ECHO this morning show a large police cordon in place at Hunter Street at the junction of St Anne Street and Islington, with three police cars, a van and multiple officers present.
Hunter Street is a major junction that connects Scotland Road to the Birkenhead Tunnel, Lime Street station and other areas of Liverpool. There is congestion to the A59/Bevington Bush/Blackstock Street, with traffic monitoring service Inrix reporting journey times of 20 minutes from Birkenhead to Liverpool.
Bus diversions and journey times
The M53 leads onto Scotland Road and Hunter Street via the Wallasey Tunnel too. Inrix is reporting journey times of 35 minutes from Wallasey to Liverpool.
Buses have also been impacted. Merseytravel said services 26 and 53 heading outbound from the city centre are diverted via St Johns Lane, Lime Street, London Road and Norton Street to St Anne Street, where they resume their normal routes. There is currently no timescale for how long this diversion will be in place.
The traffic delays along Scotland Road into the city centre are affecting all bus services using this route, with commuters asked to allow extra time for their journey this morning.
