A man has died following a collision involving a car and three lorries on the M6 northbound near Stoke-on-Trent. The crash occurred at around 4.10am on August 17, prompting the closure of both carriageways. The southbound lane reopened shortly before 8am, but the northbound stretch between junctions 15 and 16 remains closed this evening.
Emergency response and casualties
West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched three ambulances, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic, the Trust's Hazardous Area Response Team, and the Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car to the scene. Paramedics confirmed that nothing could be done to save the car driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokeswoman said: "On arrival a man, the driver of the car, was found in a critical condition. Sadly, it quickly became apparent, nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene."
A second man, a driver of a HGV, was found in a serious condition and received specialist trauma care before being conveyed to Royal Stoke University Hospital under emergency driving conditions. A third man, also a driver of a HGV, was treated for potentially serious injuries and conveyed to the same hospital. A fourth man, a HGV driver, sustained no injuries and was discharged at the scene.
Police appeal for witnesses
Staffordshire Police has confirmed that specialist officers are supporting the deceased man's next of kin. A force spokesperson said: "We were called to the M6 northbound between junctions 15 and 16 following reports of a collision involving three lorries and a car.
"The driver of the car, a man, sadly died at the scene. His next of kin are being supported by specialist officers. The driver of one of the lorries, a man, remains in hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing at this time. We are appealing for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area at the time to contact us."
