A motorcyclist has died following a collision in the early hours of Wednesday morning, police have confirmed. Officers were called to a one-vehicle collision on the A167 near Ferryhill at 1.05am today (August 5).
Incident details
The incident involved a Yamaha 600cc motorbike which was being ridden by the rider and a pillion passenger. Sadly, the rider, a 38-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pillion passenger, a woman in her twenties, sustained life-changing injuries and was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham for treatment. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been launched, and officers would like to speak to any witnesses, or those who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the bike prior to the collision.
Investigation and appeal
The bike is believed to have been travelling northbound from Chilton to Ferryhill at the time of the incident. Anyone with information should contact Durham Constabulary’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit by email at SCIU@durham.police.uk quoting incident number 12 of August 5.
The road was closed while emergency services worked at the scene, but has since reopened.
Emergency response
A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called just after 1am this morning to reports that a rider and pillion passenger had fallen from a motorbike on the A167 in Ferryhill. We dispatched three ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a doctor in a rapid response car and a duty officer who treated one patient with a suspected pelvic fracture before conveying to hospital."
