A man has died after a van plunged approximately 160 feet from a cliff in Peacehaven, East Sussex. The incident occurred at about 4:30 PM on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, when police received reports of a vehicle going over the cliff edge.
Location and Response
The wreckage of the white van was discovered on the rocks of Friar's Bay, a popular seaside spot in the Lewes district. A section of fencing along the cliff top was reportedly destroyed, and an area near Seaview Road was cordoned off by police. Lewes District Council urged the public to avoid the beach, stating: "Sussex Police are responding to an incident involving a vehicle at Friars Bay, Peacehaven. LDC officers are on site supporting. Please avoid the area, and the beach in particular."
Victim and Investigation
The driver, a man who has not yet been formally identified, was found deceased at the scene. A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: "Police received a report of a van going over the cliff edge at Peacehaven at about 4.30pm on Wednesday, 1 July. The van was located and the driver, a man who is yet to be formally identified, was sadly found deceased. Police are investigating the full circumstances of this tragic incident and the coroner’s officer has been informed."
