A man has died and three others have been taken to hospital after an explosion on an industrial estate in Bedford. Emergency services were called to Brunel Road on the afternoon of July 23 after a fire broke out in an industrial unit.

Residents describe loud blast

Residents reported hearing a loud noise that sounded like a 'bomb going off'. Another said they 'thought it was a shooting'. Louise Church said: 'It did sound like an explosion of some sort, followed by the sound of lots of debris falling.'

Police statement on casualties and investigation

Bedfordshire Police said: 'One man died at the scene and three others have been taken to hospital to receive medical treatment. An initial cordon was put in place following reports of a suspected explosion for the safety of the public, which has now also been stood down. Officers will remain on site until the investigation is handed over to the Health and Safety Executive in due course. We ask everyone to respect the family and friends of everyone involved and not to speculate on this post.'
