Man Charged with Attempted Murder Over Belfast Bus Fire

Christopher McLaughlin, 29, appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with riot, attempted murder, and two counts of arson endangering life following recent disorder in Belfast. The charges stem from an incident on June 9 when a Glider bus was set on fire on the Newtownards Road, as well as an arson attack on properties at McMaster Street.

Background of the Disorder

Trouble erupted in parts of Northern Ireland after a knife attack in Belfast earlier in June. Homes and vehicles were targeted, with victims selected based on their race. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) arrested McLaughlin on Monday in connection with these events.

Court Proceedings

During the hearing, McLaughlin indicated he understood the charges. A PSNI officer informed the court that evidence linked him to the offenses. The court was told McLaughlin has no fixed address. No bail application was made, and legal aid was granted. The case is scheduled to return to court on July 28, with McLaughlin not required to attend.
