Authorities have arrested a 65-year-old man in connection with a wildfire that scorched parts of central California, where a burned body was found inside a home. The fire is believed to have been started by sparks from a chainsaw.
Arrest and Suspected Cause
Herbert Wayne Smith was arrested on Wednesday, August 5, on suspicion of "recklessly causing" the blaze that began on Monday, August 3. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection stated the fire was likely caused while "operating equipment capable of producing sparks" without clearing flammable vegetation as required.
Smith told KCRA-TV that he was using a chainsaw to cut scrap wood when it ignited. He expressed remorse, saying, "I'm so sorry for everything that's happened. This is going to destroy my life, one way or another."
Damage and Investigation
The wildfire has destroyed seven structures and scorched more than 15 square miles (39 square km) of forest in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County. Investigators will determine whether the fire contributed to the death of a person found in a burned home in the area. Prosecutors will decide whether to file criminal charges.
