Man Arrested After Boy, 4, Injured in South Shields Hit-and-Run

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving following an alleged hit-and-run incident in South Shields that left a four-year-old boy seriously injured. The incident occurred near Ocean Beach Pleasure Park at approximately 3:20 PM on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

Victims and Injuries

The four-year-old boy remains in hospital with serious injuries. A woman in her 30s was also injured in the collision. According to Northumbria Police, the motorcycle involved struck a mother and child as they crossed the road outside the fairground. The motorcycle, described as a "petrol-powered motorbike intended for road use," immediately fled the scene.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Northumbria Police had earlier appealed for information about the incident. The force confirmed that a motorcycle and helmet believed to be linked to the collision have been recovered. The arrested man is currently in police custody, and the force's Roads Policing Unit is investigating the incident. A section of the road between Ocean Road and Beach Road was temporarily closed due to the collision.
