A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after leading police on a 45-minute chase through Salford, reaching speeds of up to 100mph.
Greater Manchester Police said the black Nissan Qashqai was seen driving dangerously and erratically and was initially asked to stop by the Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit at around 10:30am on Tuesday, July 28.
Details of the pursuit
The driver failed to stop, prompting a pursuit across the borough. The vehicle travelled the wrong way up a carriageway, the wrong way around Pendleton Roundabout, onto grass verges, and through a Tesco car park. Multiple police vehicles and helicopters from the National Police Air Service were deployed.
The car was eventually stopped after officers deployed a stinger. One officer suffered a hand injury when the stinger was dragged during the incident and was taken to hospital. Minor damage was caused to a police vehicle when the driver reverse-rammed an unmarked car. A member of the public was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the suspect's vehicle collided with her car.
Arrest and reaction
The driver, a 36-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, and failing to stop. He remains in police custody for questioning.
Police Sergeant Neil Molloy, of the Specialist Operations Team's Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit, said: "This level of driving is obviously extremely dangerous, and I'm thankful to report that no one was seriously hurt during this pursuit. The reckless actions of this man put members of the public at risk, and we're incredibly lucky that no one suffered serious injuries as a result of his actions. Driving in this manner through built-up residential areas is completely unacceptable, and I am pleased that our officers acted swiftly and professionally to bring the incident to a safe conclusion, secure an arrest and seize the vehicle."
