A 24-year-old man has died after being pulled from the sea at Camber Sands in East Sussex, having got into difficulty alongside two other swimmers on Sunday evening (August 9). Sussex Police said the man, who was visiting the popular beach, was rescued at around 7pm but could not be saved despite efforts by paramedics. The two others involved, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, managed to make it out of the water safely.
Emergency response
Emergency services, including coastguard teams and lifeboat crews, mounted a large search operation. Officers have since increased their presence in the area as inquiries continue.
Sussex Police stated: "Sadly, despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced deceased a short while later. His next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with them. Inquiries in the area remain ongoing and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time."
Coastguard statement
A coastguard spokesman added: "At 6.37pm last night, HM Coastguard was called to an incident at Camber Sands, East Sussex." An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, along with Pett Level lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.
