Lisandro Martinez's scathing comments after Manchester United's 2-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid have sparked debate, but the Argentine defender may himself be evidence of the very problem he is highlighting. His criticism of the club's hierarchy centres on their failure to sign the standard of footballer needed to challenge for major trophies again.
Martinez has featured in seven of United's first nine games this season across all competitions, with the team managing just two wins. The fact that he feels compelled to voice his views publicly about those running the club underscores the ongoing malaise dragging United down.
Frustration with the hierarchy
Martinez has had enough of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his associates attempting to make a silk purse from a cow's ear. He is right to speak out, as United remain stuck on a tragic roundabout. If other members of the dressing room believe he is being disrespectful, they should respond by proving him wrong on the pitch.
Pundits have criticised the fallen giants' recruitment season after season, so attacking Martinez for doing the same would make them hypocrites. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it also needs to be said.
Years of mediocrity
The truth is that for more than a decade, the fanbase has endured utter mediocrity both on and off the pitch. While the debt has risen, the team's success has plummeted. United have not won the league title since 2013 or the Champions League since 2008, almost two decades ago.
Having signed three midfielders in the summer, United now find themselves with one recognised left back in the form of veteran Luke Shaw and one proper striker. Years of mismanagement at the top continue to leave the club in a complete mess.
Martinez's comments are correct, and no one should be criticised for being honest and right.
