Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway was visibly moved during a heartbreaking interview with Lisa Squire, the mother of murder victim Libby Squire. The conversation on the ITV programme focused on the justice system, prompted by the case of serial sex attacker Simon Levy, jailed for life for murdering two women and raping another.
Mother's account of Libby's murder
Introducing Lisa, co-host Tom Swarbrick explained how "police and prosecutors have apologised for a string of missed opportunities to stop it". Kate added: "Lisa Squire, whose daughter Libby was raped and murdered in 2019, says she recognises the same pattern in her case and wants the Prime Minister to speak to victims of families."
Lisa described what happened to her 21-year-old daughter: "Libby went out for a night out with friends on January the 31st of 2019. Was refused entry to a club, sent back home. She went for a walk and ended up sitting in a bus stop. And unbeknown to anybody at the time, there was a serious sexual predator in the area. He was cruising the street looking for someone to commit voyeurism against and ended up targeting my daughter. Picked her up and drove her to a remote playing field where he raped and murdered her and then disposed of her body in a river. She was missing for 48 days."
Kate's reaction and call for reform
Kate gasped as she listened, saying: "It's utterly utterly sickening." She added: "And that was only in 2019, so I'm sure still very raw."
Tom noted: "Because I understand it in the run-up to what happened to Libby that night. This man had been going around performing acts of voyeurism."
Lisa has called for a meeting with Andy Burnham. Asked what she would like him to do, she said: "We need to completely overhaul our criminal justice system. You know, maybe we need to, you know, have a task force that really robustly oversees it. We need to sort this out."
Libby was murdered by Pawel Relowicz in January 2019. He was jailed for life in 2021. Good Morning Britain airs on ITV from 6am.
