Jennifer Ellison, who rose to fame as Emily Shadwick in Channel 4's Brookside, seemed destined for Hollywood stardom when she landed a role in the 2004 film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera alongside Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson. However, behind the scenes, she was living a nightmare.
Terrifying Gangland Connection
Just as her career was taking off, Ellison's home became the target of a gun attack. She was in a relationship with Liverpool gangster Tony Richardson, who was later jailed for eight years for a sword attack in 2011. Ellison described the relationship as volatile and dangerous.
“It was a volatile relationship and he was connected with this gangland world,” she revealed. “I was having nails in my letter box, going into hiding and fearing for my life walking down the street. For years I thought bad things like that happened to everyone. It was so traumatic.”
Escape Without Repercussions
Ellison feared leaving Richardson because of potential violent retaliation, including having her face slashed. However, she found a way out when she discovered he was cheating. “It was my get out of jail free card. It meant I wasn't going to get my face slashed if I left him and I could go without there being any repercussions,” she told the Daily Mail.
Ellison began dating Richardson when she was just 16. He subjected her to a campaign of abuse, criticizing her appearance, accusing her of flirting, and constantly questioning her whereabouts. In 2013, she told Cosmopolitan about his controlling behavior.
Physical Violence and Hidden Trauma
Richardson's abuse was not just emotional but physical. Ellison recalled an incident where he smashed a beer bottle over her head in a London club, leaving her covered in blood. She also suffered a broken collarbone in 2005, which she lied to doctors about, claiming it was a fall.
“I can’t tell you how many times I lied to protect him,” she said. “When he broke my collarbone in 2005, I told doctors I’d fallen, because I thought it was my fault.”
Healing Through Reality TV
Years after ending the relationship, Ellison still carried the trauma. Participating in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins in 2022 helped her confront her past. She opened up to former Commando Jason “Foxy” Fox, admitting that the relationship left her feeling worthless.
“It was so horrific what I was going through. I was such a young girl, I was a baby. I feel like opening up in the mirror room about that has put that part of my life to bed. It was like the best therapy session ever,” she said.
A Peaceful Life Now
Today, Ellison is happily married to boxer Rob Tickle, whom she met in 2008. They married in Mauritius in 2009 and have three sons together: Bobby, 12, Harry, seven, and Charlie, six. She is also stepmother to two daughters, Sophie and Chloe, both 24. Ellison now focuses on her family and her dance school, living a content and peaceful life away from the gangland world.
