Chinese influencer Jian Xiaorou has died at the age of 24, just over a year after she destroyed a statue of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin, in a video that sparked controversy.
Controversial Statue Destruction
In August 2025, Jian posted a video showing herself smashing a clay statue of Guanyin, reportedly as part of a superstition experiment. She told her followers, “Let’s see how long I can live.” The video drew significant attention online, with many followers criticizing the act as “disrespectful.”
Fatal Car Crash
According to reports, Jian died from injuries sustained in a car crash on August 10, while traveling from Guangxi to Guangzhou. The vehicle she was in collided with another vehicle. She was rushed to Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
Family Statement
Jian, who had over one million followers on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, was known for content about the paranormal and abandoned buildings. Her final video, posted on July 9, showed her making phone calls to numbers suggested by followers.
In a statement on her Douyin account, her family requested that people “refrain from spreading unverified information” and “stop making excessive speculations.” They added, “For those who wish to express their condolences, please let your concern be expressed as a quiet blessing, so that she may remain dignified and respectable in everyone’s memory.”
