A three-year-old girl has died after being found unresponsive in a pool at a tourist property in Tinajo, Lanzarote, just two days into her family's holiday.
The toddler was discovered by her parents in the water after they realised she was missing and went to look for her on the outdoor patio. She was resuscitated at the scene but was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.
Investigation under way
Spanish police have launched a full investigation into the incident, which happened on Wednesday. Reports suggest the girl may have wandered away from her parents and entered the water without knowing how to swim.
In a statement on Facebook, the safety and drowning prevention platform Canarias 1500km of Coastline said: "A girl, barely three years old, lost her life yesterday after falling into the pool at a vacation rental in the municipality of Tinajo (Lanzarote)."
Emergency response
The platform said emergency services were alerted at 6pm when the 112 emergency line received a call reporting the incident. It added: "It appears that the parents realised the child was missing and went to the outdoor patio to look for her.
"There, they discovered their daughter’s motionless body lying face down at the bottom of the pool. The girl did not know how to swim."
