Police have arrested three suspects after a 10-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered on her way home from school in Assam, India.
Attack on the Way Home
The girl left school early because she felt unwell. As she walked home, she was reportedly ambushed by a group of boys who dragged her into a jute field. There, they allegedly gang-raped and strangled her to death.
Discovery and Investigation
When the girl failed to return home, her family notified the police. Officers found her body in the field later that night. An investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of three young suspects.
Sameeran Baishya, Barpeta Additional Superintendent of Police, stated: "On the way, the accused dragged her into a jute field and gangraped her. Then they strangled her to death at the spot and left the body in the field." He added: "The three boys have been detained after initial investigation. Further investigation is on, and more details will be shared later."
Community in Shock
The incident occurred in the Barpeta district of Assam, a region known as the "Land of Sattras" and a hub for art, dance, and music. The district has a population of around 1.7 million. The brutal attack has left the community in shock.
Police continue to investigate, and it remains unclear whether additional suspects are being sought. Further information is expected in the coming days.
