Spain midfielder Gavi has explained why he believes Argentina should avoid FIFA sanctions for their conduct after the World Cup final defeat to Spain. At full-time, a brawl broke out in which Leandro Paredes shoved Gavi to the ground, and punches appeared to be thrown by Nahuel Molina and assistant coach Roberto Ayala. FIFA has since launched an investigation into the post-match scenes.
Gavi's punishment verdict
Despite being knocked to the floor, Gavi does not want severe punishment for Argentina's players. Speaking in his hometown of Los Palacios y Villafranca, as reported by Spanish media outlet Marca, he said: "No, to be honest, I don't think they should be suspended."
He added: "I understand it's not a good example for children, but there's also a more violent side to football. Perhaps the most logical thing for me would be to send them off during the match, but as I said, in the end I think it's all football and that's how it has to be."
Homecoming and Argentina reactions
Gavi was joined by fellow local Fabian Ruiz for homecoming celebrations, where both players were gifted their body weight in tomatoes. While Spain's players shared World Cup reflections during victory parades and public celebrations, several Argentina squad members posted lengthy statements on social media. Lionel Messi, Cristian Romero, Paredes and Lisandro Martinez all delivered emotional messages. Martinez, who went off injured in the final, congratulated Spain but also appeared to aim a subtle dig.
He wrote on Instagram: "With a heavy heart for not being able to bring home the cup we all wanted. But with immense pride for this jersey, for my teammates, the coaching staff, the management, the medical staff, the cooks, the equipment managers, and for every single person involved in making everything run smoothly. And, above all, for you, who sent us all your love, all your strength, that passion that defines us, and the unity of a nation that I hope will endure."
He continued: "I want to congratulate Spain on their well-deserved title. And to our people I want to tell you that the result does not define the journey. We went through adversity, we made what seemed impossible possible and we never find excuses, we only find reasons to keep going. We defend our colours far beyond the court and share unforgettable moments in the national team, together with our families and with the unconditional support of all Argentinians. It will always be a huge pride to represent them. Remember that 'the fall of the great is the happiness of the mediocre'. Thank you very much to all. Let's take care of our country.
