Four members of a Gambian family from Leeds have been identified as the victims of a fatal crash on the A38 near Derby. The collision occurred at around 11pm on Saturday, July 25, near Toyota Island in Willington.
Victims named
Abu Camara, 36; his wife, 30; their seven-month-old daughter; and an 18-year-old woman, believed to be a relative, died when a red Hyundai left the carriageway and struck a tree. The baby girl was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Driver arrested
A 33-year-old man, the driver of the Hyundai, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail.
Community tributes
The Gambian Welfare Society in Leeds said the community, particularly the Sarahuleh community, has been struck by tragedy. In a Facebook post, the society described Mr Camara as a "dedicated servant of his community" who was passionate about supporting a new mosque and mentoring children at football. "He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service," they added.
The Gambia High Commission in the UK confirmed the deaths of four Gambian nationals. A spokesperson said the four were traveling from Birmingham to Leeds when their vehicle left the road and collided with a tree. High Commissioner Dr Fatou Bensouda extended "deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families." Deputy Head of Mission Suntou Touray spoke with the president of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds to coordinate support.
