Firefighters in Sheffield battled a blaze at a former working men's club, known for its role in the 2000 film The Full Monty, on Sunday evening. The building on Shiregreen Lane, empty since 2018, was seen with smoke billowing from its roof.
Eight fire engines at the scene
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue reported that eight fire engines were deployed to the scene at 5:30pm. Videos posted on Sheffield Online showed fire spreading through rooms and onto the roof.
The fire service advised: 'Eight fire engines are in attendance at a fire in a derelict building on Shiregreen Lane, Sheffield. Please avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed if you live nearby.'
Club's history and decline
The venue, once proudly displaying a sign reading 'Home of The Full Monty', closed over eight years ago due to a decline in trade. Two planning applications, one for a flat transformation in 2020 and another for a boxing gym in 2024, were both scrapped.
Local resident Ann Bentley, who has campaigned to save the club, recalled the filming of the movie. 'We didn't even know what they were filming. We always connect the club to the film,' she told the BBC.
Fire believed deliberate
The fire is believed to have been set deliberately. Ms Bentley fears further fires and incursions on the site will continue unless action is taken.
