Four men have died in a single-vehicle crash on Liverpool Road in Huyton, Merseyside Police confirmed on Friday, July 24. The victims, two aged 23, one aged 24, and one aged 26, were all pronounced dead at the scene. A 27-year-old man, a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition.
Crash Details and Scene
Police received a report just before 2am that a black Cupra had left the road and struck a lamppost. A large police cordon is in place, with road closures on Shellingford Road, Prescot Road, Liverpool Road, Somerset Road, Back Dovecot Place, Dovecot Place, Taurus Road, Turriff Road, Dinas Lane, Lordens Road, and Fincham Road. Debris was visible across the road, and a lamppost was knocked down on a grassy verge at the junction with Ashover Avenue.
Witness Accounts
Residents were woken by a helicopter flying low around 2am. One person living on Ashover Avenue said she heard a long bang and screams at about 1.45am. Her daughter said: "It was after 1am. I was still awake, the bang was so loud I thought a lorry had overturned, that's how loud it was. I looked outside my window and there was smoke everywhere." Another resident said: "I heard the crash. It woke me up. I went out to see what had happened but by the time I'd walked down police were pushing everyone back."
Police Appeal
Superintendent Paul Holden said: "First and foremost our thoughts are with the family of the four men who sadly lost their lives... This is a truly devastating moment for their families and loved ones, and it is now our priority to get answers for them on how the collision occurred." He appealed for witnesses, doorbell footage, or dashcam footage. Road closures are expected to remain over the weekend. A temporary flight restriction zone for drones is in place under article 239 of the Air Navigation Order 2016.
