Four men have died and one remains injured after their car struck a lamppost early this morning in Huyton, Merseyside. Merseyside Police were called to Liverpool Road just before 2am following a report that a black Seat Cupra had left the road and crashed into a lamppost while travelling from Liverpool towards Knowsley.
Victims and response
Two men aged 23, along with men aged 24 and 26, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers. A 27-year-old passenger was taken to hospital and remains in a stable condition.
Road closures and investigation
A police scene remains in place. Liverpool Road and East Prescot Road are closed in both directions from Finch Lane to Princess Drive. Merseyside Police said these closures are likely to remain over the coming weekend. A temporary flight restriction zone, affecting drones, is also in place above Liverpool Road under article 239 of the Air Navigation Order 2016. Unauthorised drone flights may lead to prosecution and equipment seizure.
Superintendent Paul Holden said: "First and foremost our thoughts are with the family of the four men who sadly lost their lives following the collision in the early hours of this morning. Their families have been informed and are being supported by our specially trained family liaison officers. This is a truly devastating moment for their families and loved ones, and it is now our priority to get answers for them on how the collision occurred."
