A family of four from Leeds, originally from The Gambia, have been identified as the victims of a fatal crash on the A38 near Derby. The collision occurred on Saturday night (July 25) when a red Hyundai left the carriageway near Toyota Island and struck a tree.
The victims are 36-year-old Abu Camara, his 30-year-old wife, their seven-month-old daughter, and an 18-year-old woman believed to be a relative. A 36-year-old man and two women aged 18 and 30 were pronounced dead at the scene. The baby was taken to hospital but later died.
Driver arrested and bailed
The driver, a 33-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been bailed.
Tributes from Gambian community
The Gambian Welfare Society in Leeds paid tribute in a Facebook post, calling Mr Camara a "dedicated servant of his community" who was passionate about supporting a new mosque and mentoring young children at football. "He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and selfless service," they added.
The High Commission of The Gambia in the UK also confirmed that four Gambian nationals died in the incident. A spokesperson said the four were travelling from Birmingham to Leeds when their vehicle left the road. Her Excellency Dr Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner, extended deepest condolences. Deputy Head of Mission Mr Suntou Touray spoke with the President of the Gambia Welfare Society in Leeds to coordinate support.
