A firefighter who has spent his career helping others in their darkest moments is now facing that nightmare himself. Phil Morris, a group manager with Mid and West Wales Fire Service, lost his family home in a devastating fire, leaving him, his wife, and their three children with little more than the clothes they were wearing.
Community rallies around firefighter
The community in Brecon, Powys, has rallied to support Phil, 47, raising more than £22,000 to help his family. Neighbours and friends have urged others to contribute, stressing that "no donation is too small."
Brecon Fire Station released a statement detailing the serious house fire on Wednesday night at the home of their own group manager. The station described it as a call "none of us ever expected to receive."
"A call for one of your own"
"As firefighters, we're used to being the ones who turn up when somebody is having one of the worst days of their life," the statement said. "We go in, do everything we can to help and try to make a terrible situation that little bit better. But when that call is for one of your own, it really hits home."
Phil devoted much of his life to the fire service in the market town, fighting wildfires across mid Wales this summer, including in remote mountainous areas. Now, his colleagues are determined to support him in his hour of need.
Fundraiser surpasses £22,000
A JustGiving fundraiser, launched by the local community, aims to ease the immediate financial pressure on the family. The page has already surpassed £22,000 in donations, with funds intended to provide essential items and support as they rebuild their lives.
The page reads: "For a family, a home is so much more than four walls. It's where children grow, birthdays and holidays are celebrated, meals are shared, and precious family memories are made. To suddenly lose that sense of home, comfort, and security is something no family should have to face alone."
"As they begin the overwhelming process of putting their lives back together, we would love to show them just how much their community cares. We are raising money to help with clothing, food, temporary accommodation, everyday essentials, and the many unexpected costs they will face in the weeks and months ahead. No donation is too small. Every pound raised will help this family find their feet again and begin rebuilding a safe and loving home."
Brecon Fire Station added: "When someone has spent their life helping others, hopefully we can now come together and return some of that kindness."
