Fire devastates Atherton Bikes factory in Machynlleth

A fire broke out at the Atherton Bikes HQ and factory in Treowain business park in Machynlleth, Powys, causing devastation to the business and leaving its owners "heartbroken".

Around 30 firefighters attended the blaze. Fire crews from Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and Llanidloes were called out at around 8am on Sunday after grey smoke was seen billowing. Assistance was also provided by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, which sent an aerial ladder platform and a water bowser.

Police advise locals to avoid area

Dyfed-Powys Police advised people to keep doors and windows shut and to avoid the area.

In a video posted to Facebook, world champion motorbikers and siblings Gee and Rachel Atherton spoke of their "heartbreak" at the fire but thanked the fire brigade for their support.

Owners speak out

Rachel Atherton said: "We can confirm there has been a fire at Atherton Bikes HQ which you might have seen, we're absolutely devastated but the situation is under control. The local fire brigade has been amazing so massive thanks to them. The most important thing is no one was injured and everyone is safe."

Gee Atherton said: "This is heartbreaking news, we're absolutely devastated. We'll update all our customers, all of you guys who are waiting for bikes over the next few days. We'll be in touch as soon as we can, thanks for being patient and thanks for everyone's support. We're heartbroken for the team and all the staff that call this place home."

Company statement

A statement on the Atherton Bikes website said the company was "incredibly grateful" to Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and they are "still working to understand the full extent of the damage and disruption".
