Arthur Fery, the British wildcard, defeated Damir Dzumhur in the first round of Wimbledon after tensions boiled over in the second set. Fery told his opponent to 'stop staring at me' following a dispute over a let call that led to Dzumhur confronting the umpire and calling the supervisor.
Match Drama Unfolds
The incident occurred at 2-1 in the second set. Dzumhur believed his serve was a let and stopped playing, but the umpire did not call a let, awarding the point to Fery for a break point. Dzumhur stormed to the net, arguing with the chair umpire and asking Fery to 'look in my eyes' to confirm he hadn't stopped. Fery stated he hadn't heard a let and continued play.
Dzumhur was broken, and Fery won the last five games of the set to take it 6-2. The Bosnian continued complaining to the supervisor throughout the set, while Fery put earbuds in during a changeover to block out the noise.
Fery's Victory
Fery came from a set and a break down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1. After the incident, Fery won nine straight games before Dzumhur finally held serve. Fery said he 'expected' such behaviour from the world No. 105. The British No. 3 now advances to the second round.
