Fenerbahce have confirmed that UEFA is investigating Mason Greenwood for his role in the chaotic scenes that followed his side’s Champions League qualifying play-off victory over Lyon. The match in France, which Fenerbahce won 2-1, was marred by ugly incidents after the full-time whistle.
Incidents after the final whistle
Greenwood’s team-mate Matteo Guendouzi, who played for Lyon’s arch-rivals Marseille between 2021 and 2024, provoked Lyon fans as he slowly left the pitch after the win at Groupama Stadium. Clashes then broke out on the pitch and in the tunnel involving players and staff from both teams.
Footage that emerged after the brawl appeared to show a figure in what looked like a Lyon tracksuit emerging from the tunnel and attempting to kick Guendouzi. Former Manchester United forward Greenwood was also caught up in the ugly scenes, and Fenerbahce have now confirmed that both players are under investigation by UEFA.
Guendouzi and coach respond
Speaking after the game, Guendouzi claimed he had been ‘disrespected’ by home supporters. He said: "You know, when you've got 60,000 people insulting your family, your mum, your children -- even before the match - and nobody from the refereeing team tells the stadium to be quiet."
"Because I know that in France, when this sort of thing happens, there comes a point where they'll speak to the supporters and the match might be stopped. For 90 minutes - even longer if you count the warm-up -- they were insulting my family. That really gets to you. If you want to banter, then it goes both ways. They insulted my mum and my family; to me, that was disrespectful."
Fenerbahce head coach Ismail Kartal also spoke about the scenes and said: "As a team we all stood together to support Guendouzi. Support was provided. That is what teamwork is all about."
