William Palmer, a Missouri native known for his generous spirit, was reportedly indulging his passion for collecting scrap metal when he spotted Brittany Rivoire, 36, standing by the roadside. According to his fiancée Riyen Jones, Palmer decided to offer Rivoire a ride to a warming shelter in St Louis after she approached him at a gas station, explaining she was cold and needed shelter.
Palmer was accompanied by a friend when he initially stopped to pick up Rivoire. However, the friend reportedly became uncomfortable with Rivoire's allegedly strange behavior and decided to leave the vehicle before the tragic events unfolded.

Jones revealed that she had repeatedly warned Palmer about the dangers of picking up strangers, expressing constant concern for his safety. 'I used to tell him all the time not to pick up people off the side of the road anymore. He did it a lot,' she told reporters. 'If he saw someone walking, he was picking them up and taking them as far as he could.'
Palmer's lifeless body was discovered just before 2:30am on Sunday morning, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
