A father and his two sons attacked mourners at a funeral wake, gouging eyes and hurling pint glasses in a violent brawl. Liam Redmond snr, Liam Redmond jnr and Luke Redmond left a lorry driver permanently scarred, requiring nine stitches to a facial wound, after the event descended into what a judge called “an entirely disgraceful event”.
Attack at Prenton Golf Club
The Redmonds, all of Holm Lane in Prenton, Wirral, attended a wake at Prenton Golf Club on October 17, 2024. Bar manager Kate Verdin-Walsh said the atmosphere was initially good, but staff alerted her to shouting in the bar area. She found 12 to 15 people in a circle, with two men arguing.
The father and his sons were escorted out, but a large-scale fight broke out near the exit. Witness Ronald Hancox saw Redmond snr pressing his thumb inside another man’s eye and intervened. Another attendee, Carl Hancox, saw the father strike a man called Billy and force his thumbs into his eyes. When Carl rushed to help, all three defendants attacked him, punching and kicking him while he was on the floor.
Sentencing
Redmond snr received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, plus rehabilitation and alcohol monitoring. His sons were each given 12-month community orders with unpaid work. The judge told the family: “This was an entirely disgraceful event. All three of you should be ashamed of yourselves.”
