Emmerdale has confirmed the identity of Dr Caitlin Todd's killer, as the villainous doctor meets a violent end in tonight's episode. The killer is Sarah Sugden, who inadvertently causes Todd's death during a confrontation.
Dr Todd's reign of terror
Dr Todd, played by Caroline Harker, had been terrorizing the village for some time. Her first victim was Jacob Sugden, whom she bullied relentlessly at the hospital where he was training. She then discovered Charity Dingle's surrogate baby secret and used it to blackmail her, before sexually assaulting Charity.
Charity reported the assault to the police, but there was not enough evidence to convict. Todd claimed the encounter was consensual, and her reputation as a community-spirited doctor shielded her from consequences.
The final confrontation
This week, Todd returned to the Dales after meeting Manpreet Sharma. Vanessa Woodfield publicly berated her for the pain she caused Charity, prompting Todd to confront Charity directly.
In tonight's episode, Todd takes Charity's phone and refuses to leave, threatening to sue for slander. She continues to deny the rape, even accusing Charity of being in love with her. Charity demands Todd admit to the assault, but Todd cruelly dismisses it as a 'drunken fumble' and threatens to tell Sarah the truth about her surrogate baby.
Charity's emotional confession
Enraged, Charity attacks Todd, pinning her to the sofa. She breaks down in tears, revealing that she was sexually assaulted at age 14 by corrupt police officer DI Mark Bails. She tells Todd that the shame is not hers to carry, and she is letting it go.
Charity leaves Todd with an ultimatum: stay away from her family, or she will tell everyone what Todd did. But Sarah, who has been listening at the door, is horrified and insists on going to the police, even though Charity says they cannot do anything.
Sarah's fatal act
Todd laughs and insists Charity is lying. Fiercely protective of her step-grandmother, Sarah snaps and pushes Todd, causing her to stumble, hit her head on the table, and fall to the ground, bleeding. Sarah reels in horror as she realizes she has killed Todd.
Meanwhile, Serena Sugden, concerned about Charity's wellbeing, decides to drop in unannounced.
