An elderly woman suffered a bleed on the brain after being startled by a driver beeping at her over a parking space outside M&S, police said. The incident took place on Friday 11 September at 3pm at the Grand Junction Retail Park in Crewe.
What happened
The elderly woman was attempting to get into the passenger side of her car, which was parked in a disabled parking space, when an impatient driver beeped at her. The driver sounded their horn because an empty parking space was blocked while the woman got into her car, police said.
The sound of the horn startled the elderly shopper, who fell and hit her head. The driver of the other car sped away from the scene, police said.
Aftermath and appeal
Passers-by rushed to help the woman and she was taken to hospital, where she was found to have suffered a bleed on the brain, Cheshire Live reports. As of yesterday the woman was still in hospital.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: "An elderly couple were approaching their car which was parked in a disabled space outside M&S at Grand Junction Retail Park.
"The man was opening the passenger door for his disabled wife when another car approached and began beeping its horn. The driver was signalling towards the couple, urging them to get out of the way so that they could park in an empty space next to the couple.
"The couple were startled by the behaviour and as a result the woman fell over and banged her head. The driver of the car subsequently sped off from the scene. The woman was assisted at the scene by a number of off-duty nurses before being taken to hospital where it was found that she had suffered a bleed on the brain. The woman remains in hospital at this time."
Police are appealing for witnesses and are still trying to identify the driver. Any witnesses can call the police on 101, quoting incident number 2418994.
