A drunken customer who robbed a Coatbridge shopkeeper of three lottery scratchcards has narrowly avoided prison. Callum Bradley, 27, was placed under social work supervision for two years at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week. He was also fined £600 and ordered to complete 210 hours of unpaid community work.
Details of the Robbery
Bradley, of Willow Drive, Airdrie, admitted robbing the male shopkeeper at USave in Woodside Street, Coatbridge, on August 30 last year. He also admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards police officers after his arrest.
Prosecutor Flora McCamley said the shopkeeper was in the shop around 4pm when Bradley entered, apparently under the influence of alcohol. She stated: “He asked the victim to phone him a taxi but the shopkeeper refused. Bradley then stayed in the shop while another customer was being served. When that customer left he approached the till area and attempted to take scratchcards from a stand. The victim tried to prevent this and a struggle ensued before Bradley left with three scratchcards.”
Arrest and Threats
Police were contacted immediately and officers located Bradley in Woodside Street, close to the shop. He became aggressive, shouting threats such as, “I’m going to kick your head in”, and “you’re getting knocked out in the cell”.
Defence lawyer Simon Gilmour said Bradley had “acted foolishly while intoxicated”, adding: “This is at the bottom end of the scale when it comes to robbery.”
