Death of security guard from carbon monoxide at rally probed

A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) has been announced into the death of a young security guard who died from carbon monoxide poisoning after attending a motorcycle rally in the Highlands. Samuel Beaven, 27, from Forres in Moray, died shortly after the annual ‘Thunder in the Glens’ event in Aviemore on August 25, 2023.

Beaven worked for Moray Security, often manning doors as a bouncer at The Play House Nightclub in Nairn and at Foggies in Elgin. A preliminary hearing is set for August 11 at Inverness Sheriff Court.

Purpose of the Fatal Accident Inquiry

The purpose of an FAI is to determine the cause of death, the circumstances in which the death occurred, and to establish what reasonable precautions could have been taken to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances. Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial and establish facts rather than apportion blame.

Debbie Carroll of the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Scotland's death investigation authority, said: “The death of Samuel Beaven occurred while in the course of his employment and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory. The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the Sheriff. Mr Beaven’s family will continue to be kept informed of significant developments as court proceedings progress.”

Tributes to Samuel Beaven

Samuel was remembered as a “much-loved son, brother, brother-in-law” and a “devoted uncle”. A statement from his loved ones released at the time of his death reads: “Sadly, on Friday, August 25, 2023, Samuel Beaven (Sam) of Bogton Road, Forres, aged 27 years, a much-loved son of Helen, a beloved brother of Karl and Edina, a caring brother-in-law, a devoted uncle, best friend of Daniel and Bethan and a sadly missed friend to many.”

His friends also paid tribute to a “respected gentleman”. One person wrote online: “Sam Beaven, a very much loved and respected gentleman to the Highlands and Moray was taken away from us. This is truly a very emotional post to write and I can only imagine the hurt and pain that the family are having to deal with right now during this time. Sam was an incredible friend and colleague to many of us and his approachable, exciting personality has truly left a mark on our lives and will be greatly missed. Sam's amazing legacy will never be replaced.”
