A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 60s was stabbed in broad daylight on a street in north London.
The Metropolitan Police were called at approximately 11:50am on Thursday to Burnt Oak Broadway in Edgware, near a bus stop. Officers and paramedics, including a specialist trauma team from the London Air Ambulance, attended but the woman died at the scene.
The suspect was arrested hours later and remains in custody. The area around Burnt Oak Broadway, close to the junction with Limesdale Gardens, remains cordoned off for forensic examination.
Witnesses told local media that the woman was stabbed several times and that members of the public chased the attacker. Some reports suggested the stabbing occurred during a mugging.
Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis, who leads policing in Edgware, described the arrest as a significant development. He urged the public not to speculate while investigations continue, and extended his thoughts to the victim's family.
