A British woman has shared fears that her missing 65-year-old father could be suffering from a 'manic episode' abroad after vanishing from a hotel in France.
Andrew Shirlaw was last known to be in Paris after checking out of his hotel on 23 September. His worried family say they have not heard from him since the previous day – something daughter Gabriella Payne says is completely out of character.
The 33-year-old from London described her father as "vulnerable" and stressed "he needs to be found as soon as possible".
Family describes behaviour during episode
Gabriella told NeedToKnow: "He is currently experiencing a manic episode, which means that he talks to strangers and can act odd and eccentrically out in public. He will walk up to strangers, strike up conversation and may even compliment them."
"When someone disagrees with him he can become aggressive," she added. "But he is not violent. I am worried that someone may have retaliated to his behaviour because it can be very frustrating interacting with him when he is manic."
Details of last known movements
Andrew, known as Andy to loved ones, is from East Finchley and is described as a big part of his local community. He had been staying at the Hôtel Littéraire Marcel Aymé, BW Premier Collection Paris.
His family last had contact with him on 22 September before he reportedly checked out the following day. It is believed Andrew had planned to travel south before eventually ending his trip in Toulouse.
Family friends who last saw him in Paris are also said to be extremely worried.
Appearance and ongoing search
Andrew is described by his family as around 6ft tall and of a slim build. He often wears glasses and a hearing aid, and is known for wearing patterned shirts, shorts and sandals.
"He has a shake in his leg which is more prominent when he is manic," Gabriella said. "He can’t focus on one thing for long and so his ideas constantly change. He always maintains contact with his family. This is the first time he has not maintained contact."
Gabriella said she has reported her father missing to the Metropolitan Police, French police and the British Consulate.
