The father of a soldier who died in Wylam has paid tribute to those who helped in the search for his son and urged people to "cherish your loved ones".
Paul Potts spoke of the "incredible" support his family received during the search for Lance Corporal Liam Potts of the Coldstream Guards. Liam, 22, was reported missing on Saturday, August 15, following a night out with friends. Northumbria Police confirmed that officers recovered a body from the River Tyne, a short distance from Wylam Bridge, on Tuesday, August 18.
Family thanks Army and rescue teams
Last week, the force confirmed two men in their 20s had been re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. Now, Liam's father Paul has released a statement through the Ministry of Defence.
Paul said: "There are lots of wonderful things being said about our son, which has genuinely touched our hearts. Myself, Mandy, James and Erin would like to thank everyone so much for their kindness and help over this last week."
"A very special thank you to Liam's other family, the British Army, and particularly his fellow Coldstreamers. Their support during this very emotional time is 'Nulli Secundus'." Nulli Secundus is the regimental motto of the Coldstream Guards, meaning "second to none".
Search volunteers praised
Paul also thanked those who had helped the search for Liam last week. He said: "Without question, our brilliant rescue volunteers and professionals have, with dignity and a world class standard, done the whole Northeast proud. The generous donations we’ve received are simply overwhelming and I know the rescue teams are feeling the same."
"A tragedy like this has and will continue to affect everyone. I hope each person involved can get and receive help if needed."
Wishes for injured man
Paul also shared his family's personal wishes to a man in his 20s who suffered serious injuries on the evening Liam was reported missing. Northumbria Police has previously said how, prior to Liam's disappearance, officers received a report of a disturbance at The Boathouse and a subsequent collision on Wylam Bridge. This involved a vehicle and a group of pedestrians. A man and a woman – each aged in their 20s – both sustained serious injuries in the collision which were not life-threatening.
Paul added that the family wished the injured man "a speedy and full recovery", adding: "He and his family equally need the compassion and love we have received."
He also shared a message in Liam's honour: "Dear all, Please hold, cuddle, and cherish your loved ones. Smile, laugh and enjoy each other’s company. Liam would have raised a glass to that. Regards, The proudest Dad in the world, Paul."
