The Corsican National Liberation Front-Union of Combatants (FLNC-UC) has released a video showing around 12 armed, hooded members standing with submachine guns and rifles, issuing a chilling warning to tourists considering moving to or buying a holiday home on the island.
Threat to Tourists
In the clip, a man believed to be the group's leader says: "Until our national rights are recognised and respected, we have only one message for them [tourists]: stay at home. Otherwise, do not consider yourselves safe on our national territory."
The FLNC-UC described the flow of foreigners moving to the island for work or to purchase a second home as "rampant settlement-driven colonisation", comparing it to "a weapon of mass dilution that colonialism has always used against the peoples it seeks to subjugate, or even wipe out".
Population Growth
Figures from INSEE, France's national statistics office, show that Corsica's population grew by 32,900 inhabitants between 2015 and 2025.
The video follows FLNC-UC's claims that plans to give the Mediterranean island greater autonomy do not go far enough, according to the Daily Mail.
Autonomy Bill
The group says the proposed Bill "leads to the denial of the existence of our people and the repudiation of the main demands of recent decades". The leader added: "The Corsican people will never be a vulgar administrative community."
The Bill, which passed through France's lower house of Parliament in June and will go before the Senate in October, includes recognising Corsica as a distinct historical, linguistic and cultural community, and granting its local assembly more power while keeping the island within the French Republic.
The FLNC-UC threat was issued during a press conference attended only by local news outlet Corse Matin, the only media invited. The group also confirmed its goal of "national independence", adding that it will continue to support, through "currently unilateral peace efforts", all routes to a solution that aligns with the wishes of the Corsican people.
