A Reddit user recounted a disturbing incident on the London Underground where a man stole a seat from a pregnant woman after a kind commuter offered it to her. The post, shared on July 1, 2026, has garnered over 600 comments, including responses from the expectant mother and her husband.
The commuter, who was traveling on the Jubilee line from Stanmore, noticed a pregnant woman boarding and offered her his seat after witnessing others in priority seats ignore her. As he stood up, another man pushed the woman aside and took the seat. The commuter confronted him, saying, 'I told him it was for a pregnant woman,' but the man remained seated obstinately.
Pregnant Woman's Account
The pregnant woman, who is eight months pregnant, later commented on the post, thanking the kind man and detailing the incident. She said, 'I got on the tube this morning and since I am 8 months pregnant I usually ask for a seat... However, this morning, I didn't have to as this kind man stood up and then this other 2 meter tall, well built man pushed in front of me to grab the seat.' She added that the man ignored her and the kind commuter, eventually pretending to sleep to avoid facing the carriage.
Another passenger eventually offered her a priority seat, but she chose not to escalate the situation further. She expressed concern about the man's behavior, stating, 'I would have understood if he also had a disability but he had clearly been capable to stand until that point... I think he was just lazy and rude.'
Husband's Reaction and Public Outrage
The woman's husband also weighed in, writing, 'So this was my wife! Thank you for noticing as not many do. Thanks to the other person who stood up to give her a seat. To the guy that just ignored my wife you're an a******!'
Other Reddit users expressed outrage. One commented, 'That's absolutely ridiculous. I would have shamed him loudly in front of everyone.' Another noted the irony that the man's work shirt revealed he works for a company that 'makes products to help people with mobility and health issues.' A third user suggested contacting his employer to shame him.
Broader Context of Priority Seats
Priority seats on public transport are designated for disabled people, the elderly, and pregnant women. While many passengers follow the unwritten rule of giving up seats, incidents like this highlight that not everyone adheres to these norms. The Reddit post has sparked a broader discussion about courtesy on public transport and the need for greater awareness.
