The trial of Desmond Carter, 21, one of three men accused of raping a Louisiana State University cheerleader who later died after being hit by a car, is set to begin on August 17.
Madison Brooks, 19, was allegedly assaulted by Carter, Casen Carver, and Kaivon Washington after they all drank together at a bar in January 2023. The men deny the allegations, claiming the intercourse was consensual.
Fatal Aftermath
CCTV footage captured Brooks staggering into oncoming traffic after she was allegedly abandoned on the pavement. Officials state her blood-alcohol concentration measured .319%, nearly four times the legal driving threshold. She wandered onto a four-lane carriageway where a vehicle struck her.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office confirmed that Brooks died from "multiple traumatic injuries" from the collision. Two Good Samaritans reportedly attempted CPR in torrential rain.
Legal Proceedings
In legal documents filed last year, barristers for Carver and Carter argued that injuries consistent with sexual assault on Brooks' body were not inflicted by their clients, claiming she had consensual rough sex with another LSU student the night before.
Washington faces additional charges: he is accused of raping another young woman in October 2023 after meeting at the same pub, and of raping a 12-year-old girl in 2020 when he was 15.
