A fire broke out at Catterick Garrison Army Barracks in North Yorkshire on the evening of September 24, sending one person to hospital with smoke inhalation. Fire crews from across the region were called to the scene at 7.48pm after the accommodation block was found "well alight".
Blaze Visible for Miles
Pictures and video posted online showed flames and smoke pouring from the roof of the block, which could be seen from miles away. Firefighters used an aerial platform to douse the flames.
Fire engines from Richmond, Reeth, Bedale, Leyburn, Northallerton, Masham, and an aerial ladder from Darlington were all sent to the scene.
Fire Brought Under Control
The blaze was eventually brought under control, and firefighters left the scene at 2.43am. An investigation is due to take place later this morning (Friday).
A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "On arrival, with the building found to be well alight, additional resources from Leyburn, Northallerton, Masham and an aerial ladder from Darlington were also mobilised. After the fire was brought under control, the last fire resources left the scene at 2.43am."
Largest British Army Garrison
Catterick Garrison, located near the town of Richmond, North Yorkshire, is the largest British Army garrison in the world. As of 2021, the barracks had a population of around 14,000 and covered over 2,400 acres.
The spokesperson added: "On-site personnel will keep a watching brief overnight, with additional Fire Investigation due to take place later this morning. One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation."
