Louise Harris, 42, a carer from Pontardawe, Wales, has been jailed after screaming abuse at an 81-year-old dementia patient and waving a kitchen knife. Harris pleaded guilty to ill-treating Elizabeth Anne Shipton and to criminal damage, receiving a three-month sentence at Swansea Crown Court.
The Incident
Harris was hired by Elizabeth's family for a trial shift in February while a formal care package was arranged. After the daughter, Tracy Faram, left for an hour, Elizabeth accidentally pressed her Lifeline button, triggering a crisis call. Although operators ended the call, Harris became enraged and began screaming, calling Elizabeth a “horrible cow” and shouting, “I hope you die in your sleep you f***ing horrible cow.” She knelt down, placed her arm on Elizabeth's chest, and demanded money. When Elizabeth complained of pain, Harris yelled, “I don't care, where's your money?”
Harris then waved a large kitchen knife and trashed the home. Tracy witnessed the abuse via CCTV cameras and called police, who broke down the door and found Harris “slumped on the floor.”
Sentence and Reaction
Sentencing, Judge Huw Rees said elderly people were entitled to be treated with “respect, dignity, and humanity” but that Harris had been “heartless and cruel,” showing a “callous disregard” for her welfare. In mitigation, lawyer Andrew Evans said Harris, a recovering alcoholic, found a bottle of vodka and “gave into temptation” after the daughter left. He added she was genuinely remorseful for her “wholly unacceptable behaviour.”
Harris had originally been charged with attempted robbery, but the Crown Prosecution Service dropped that charge. Tracy Faram has launched a bid to review the sentence as “unduly lenient,” stating, “The judge's hands were tied by the sentencing guidelines. You could see he was raging. For her to be serving just over a month is unbelievable when you think what we've had since February. We've been living this day in, day out, with my mother getting worse.”
