Cameron Menzies has received a public message of support from Ross Smith after the latter rushed to his opponent's aid. Menzies suffered a medical incident while on stage during the World Matchplay match at Winter Gardens, Blackpool.
Smith was one of the first on hand after the 37-year-old appeared to sway and lose balance before slumping to the ground during the fourth leg of the match. Menzies was leading 2-1 at the time, but has been forced to withdraw from the competition.
Medical Cause and Recovery
The Scotsman was helped off the stage by Smith and the referee and was seen by medics. It's been revealed that the episode was caused by high blood pressure, with Menzies cleared to continue his recovery in his accommodation.
In an official statement, the PDC said: "Cameron Menzies was taken ill during his round two match against Ross Smith at the Betfred World Matchplay on Wednesday evening. Cameron experienced high blood pressure, which caused him to feel dizzy and subsequently faint. Following an assessment by the on-site medical team, Cameron was deemed well enough to return to his accommodation."
Smith's Support
Smith, who was trailing 2-1 at the time, took to social media to voice his support for his opponent. "So glad my good friend @CameronMenzies is ok," he wrote. "Health comes before anything. You will come back stronger than ever love ya mate."
Menzies' withdrawal means Smith has advanced to the quarter-finals, where he is set to face Gerwyn Price. The Welshman stormed through as an 11-5 victor against Rob Cross.
Pundit Reactions
Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Mark Webster suggested that Smith's focus would be firmly on ensuring Menzies was in good health, instead of looking ahead to the quarter-final. "Smith was obviously concerned," he said. "He'll be offering his support. While the medics are seeing to Cameron, he's got to stay on the practice board. But ultimately it's just about hoping that Cameron is okay at the minute."
Speaking about Menzies' sudden withdrawal, pundit Glen Durrant added: "I echo the thoughts of everybody; right now, it's all about Cameron Menzies. He's in tip top form at the moment. It's a real tough one to take."
