Byker Assault: Major Police Presence, One Seriously Injured

A significant police presence remains in Byker following an assault on Tuesday evening that left one person seriously injured. The incident, which occurred around 7:30pm on Shields Road, prompted a large emergency response involving Northumbria Police, the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

Police Confirm No Wider Risk to Public

Authorities have stated there is no wider risk to the public, but work at the scene continues. A cordon remains in place on Shields Road, with officers guarding the area. The injured individual has been transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.

Emergency Services Respond

An NEAS spokesperson said: 'We received a call at 19.24 last night (Tuesday 16 June) to reports of a person seriously injured on Shields Road in Byker, Newcastle. We sent two emergency ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, our Hazardous Area Response Team, and the Great North Air Ambulance, who treated and transported the patient to the RVI.'

A Northumbria Police spokesperson added: 'At 7.25pm today (Tuesday) we received a report of a disturbance on Shields Road in the Byker area of Newcastle. Emergency services are in attendance. A section of the road has been closed to traffic. There is no wider risk to the public.'

A GNAAS spokesperson said: 'Our critical care team was activated at 7.34pm to reports of an assault in Byker, Newcastle. We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 7.48pm. Our team worked alongside NEAS to assess and treat a patient. The patient was taken to hospital by a NEAS road crew, accompanied by our team.'
