Bruno Fernandes exit fears after Man Utd draw with Tottenham

Manchester United supporters believe Bruno Fernandes could be thinking about leaving the club after Saturday's disappointing 1-1 draw against Tottenham at Old Trafford.

United threw away a one-goal lead in stoppage time after Bryan Mbeumo scored with 20 minutes remaining. Despite Tottenham being reduced to 10 men following Rodrigo Bentancur's straight red card, Roberto De Zerbi's side secured their third point of the season thanks to a late Dominic Solanke header.

Captain's frustration evident

The United players were understandably deflated afterwards, but none more so than captain Fernandes. The late equaliser means United have managed just one win from their six league matches this term. The Portuguese veteran was clearly frustrated by the manner in which his side threw away the three points, as well as his own performance.

It took Fernandes 23 minutes to complete his first pass on the night, marking the longest time he has ever had to wait to find a team-mate in his Premier League career. His frustration was evident late in the game during the red card incident. While a sea of red shirts rushed into the melee between Bentancur and Luke Shaw, Fernandes chose to sit down on his own away from the carnage with a look of despair.

Fan reaction and exit speculation

Footage captured by fans after the game appears to show the 32-year-old storming out of the stadium earlier than his team-mates. One fan captioned it: "Bruno Fernandes normally signs for fans after every game but was the first to leave vs Spurs and wasn’t happy!"

Another United supporter commented: "I think this is his final season." A third added: "Thought his entire game was off today, this is definitely his last season here. Looks checked out," while a fourth chimed in with: "He’s playing like a man who has finally realised that United aren’t salvageable and his last season is something that he doesn’t want to endure." Others said: "Can't help but think this is his last season. Lock in Bruno, make it special," and: "He can easily go to the Saudi league."

Contract and past transfer interest

Fernandes was heavily linked with a United exit in the summer of 2025, with the club reportedly open to selling him to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal for a fee in the region of £100million. However, he rejected the interest and remained at the club, later saying of United's stance: "From the club I felt it was, 'If you go it's not so bad for us'. It hurts me a bit."

The playmaker went on to break the long-standing Premier League assists record last season, securing the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in the process. His contract expires next summer, with the option to extend for an additional year. Fernandes arrived from Sporting Club for around £46.6m in January 2020 and has 111 goals in 335 appearances for the Red Devils.
