An 88-year-old British man has died after his car burst into flames in Cyprus. The incident occurred in Avgorou, an area in the south-west of the island, after the vehicle became stuck in mud.
Details of the incident
The driver was travelling to an animal shelter with his dog and a carer when they reportedly got lost and drove onto a dirt road. While attempting to free the car, sparks ignited nearby dry reeds, causing a fire that quickly spread to the vehicle on Saturday.
The care worker managed to escape and urged the man to leave the car. However, according to her statements to the police, the driver asked her to go and seek help.
Discovery and investigation
After the fire was extinguished, the man's body was found beside the vehicle, outside the passenger door, suggesting he had eventually tried to escape the flames. His dog also died in the blaze.
An investigation has been launched to establish the full circumstances, and a post-mortem confirmed the man burned to death. He lived in Pachna, a village in southern Cyprus, according to the Cyprus Mail.
