Spanish police have arrested a 43-year-old man in Benidorm suspected of stealing from British holidaymakers during breakfast buffets. The thief allegedly targeted tourists as they piled their plates at self-service breakfast bars in the resort's hotels, snatching handbags, phones, and wallets left behind to secure tables.
Distraction theft method
A National Police spokesman said the man was arrested as the 'alleged perpetrator' of 15 thefts in 'different hotels'. The suspect used a distraction theft method, entering dining rooms during breakfast hours to steal belongings.
The investigation began after analyzing complaints where victims described the same modus operandi. They left handbags hanging on chair backs and found them missing upon returning from serving breakfast.
Investigation and arrest
Police determined the suspect selected victims outside dining rooms, then entered and headed to chosen tables. Using a garment as a 'cover', he stole bags without arousing suspicion, hiding items under the clothing before leaving.
After identifying the suspect, officers set up an operation and arrested him. The suspect has been bailed to appear in court.
