A five-year-old boy is in critical condition after falling from a fourth-floor window of an apartment building in the Bronx, New York City, on Sunday evening.
The boy, wearing only a nappy, fell to the pavement next to the building on Buchanan Place near Davidson Avenue in University Heights at around 5.30pm. He sustained injuries indicative of falling from an elevated position, officials said.
Witnesses describe the scene
Footage from the scene shows the boy kneeling motionless on the sidewalk, his head on the ground and his arms outstretched, according to the New York Post. Bystanders expressed disbelief, with one onlooker in a video posted to social media saying, "Wow, a boy just fell out the window!" Two cops turned the boy on his side as another onlooker said, "God bless him."
One witness, Tone Rodriguez, told a local news site that he and other bystanders were outside when they heard a loud thud. "His face was all swollen on this side," Tone said. "He was like, you can tell he got hit bad. We were trying to figure out where he came from."
Hospital and police response
The boy was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition. Police said that no arrests have been made and no criminality was immediately suspected.
