A 19-year-old man who trained as a boxer has been jailed for nine months after punching a 17-year-old girl in an unprovoked attack in Oldham.
Thomas Heffron, of Rochdale Road, Shaw, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Minshull Street Crown Court on August 14.
The attack took place on the evening of October 26, 2024, in Royton. Heffron broke off from a group of people to approach the victim and her friend, then attempted to punch the friend. When the friend moved out of the way, Heffron struck the girl instead, knocking her unconscious and leaving her on the ground. He then fled down Rochdale Road.
Victim's injuries and ongoing impact
The victim, who had finished work and met friends that evening, was taken to hospital the next day. She suffered multiple fractures to her skull, bleeds to her brain, and needed stitches to her face. Since the assault, she has experienced problems concentrating and sleeping, along with severe exhaustion and migraines. She continues to attend Salford Royal Hospital for treatment, and her memory, cognition, and problem-solving skills have been affected.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, she said: “Immediately after the night of the incident I remember waking up looking in the mirror with a face full of blood, my teeth bleeding and my lip hanging off my face. I was completely confused as to how this had happened.”
She added: “Everything has changed and the course of my life has been altered because of your actions. I do not sleep anymore and no amount of medication that I am given has worked. I now have permanent damage to my brain that will never return to how it was before you hit me.”
Investigation and sentencing
Detective Constable Kirstie Masterton, of Oldham CID, praised the victim's bravery and dignity, noting that the conviction was secured with evidence from the public and from Heffron's mobile phone, which showed he had discussed the events with friends and acquaintances.
Masterton also highlighted ongoing efforts to tackle violence against women and girls in Greater Manchester, including initiatives such as Operation North Star and Safer Streets.
