Police in Amsterdam declared a major incident after a vehicle believed to be carrying explosives crashed in the Osdorp district following a pursuit. The incident began with a ram-raid at an ATM in the German town of Fürth at around 4:30 am on Tuesday, involving a BMW M1 that was later traced to Amsterdam-Osdorp.
Crash and evacuation
The vehicle crashed on Nierkerkestraat, and emergency services including officers, military personnel, and other units responded. Eyewitnesses reported seeing four men flee from the car after the crash. As a safety measure, properties within a 100-metre radius were evacuated while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit examined the vehicle.
Investigation and searches
The Special Intervention Service (DSI) searched nearby properties for the suspects. A police helicopter was seen hovering overhead, and the road was sealed off. Dutch broadcaster Nos reported that the operation was escalated to a major incident requiring coordinated action between emergency services.
German authorities confirmed that nothing was stolen during the ATM ram-raid, but the structure sustained significant damage and a fire broke out. Footage on social media showed several ambulances on standby at the scene. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with video evidence to contact them as the investigation continues.
