Emergency services are tackling a large blaze at accommodation buildings in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, Britain's biggest military barracks. The fire is expected to keep crews working through the night.
Fire at accommodation block
Fire crews were called to the scene on Thursday evening, 24th September. The blaze is believed to have started at the Gaza Barracks Accommodation block.
A North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have multiple appliances in attendance an accommodation block fire."
Additional support called in
An appliance from County Durham and Darlington, along with their Ariel Ladder Platform, is also in attendance. The spokesperson added: "This incident is expected to be ongoing throughout the night."
Catterick Garrison, located near Richmond in North Yorkshire, is the world's biggest British Army garrison. Eyewitnesses say thick smoke from the blaze can be seen for miles around.
Local response
Councillor Kevin Foster, representing Hipswell and Colburn, told the Northern Echo: "At this stage, details are limited, and I am awaiting further information."
He added: "My immediate concern is for the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the camp, including our military personnel, their families and the emergency services responding to the incident. I would like to thank our emergency services for their response and hope that everyone involved is safe."
Foster, who serves as North Yorkshire Council's Armed Forces Champion, said he would continue to monitor the situation and offer support to the Armed Forces community. He said: "My thoughts are with everyone affected, and I hope to hear positive news as further details emerge."
