BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty paused the show to deliver a heartbreaking update: a woman's body found in a suitcase in Athens has been confirmed as a Scottish citizen.
Naga Munchetty told viewers: "A body found in a suitcase in Athens has been identified as a woman from Scotland. 38-year-old Elisabeth-Jane Ross arrived in the Greek capital last month from Cyprus. Her body was found in a derelict building two weeks ago. Local police are trying to trace her movements and establish a cause of death."
Discovery in Kypseli
The 38-year-old's remains were discovered inside the case by a homeless person in Kypseli, Athens, on July 18. Officials determined she had died between five and seven days before she was found.
Greek law enforcement confirmed her identity following Interpol's examination of fingerprint records, reports the Express.
Investigation ongoing
A Greek police representative told the BBC: "Further details have been requested regarding when she arrived in Greece, how, and with whom. We cannot provide further details at this stage, as the investigation is fully under way."
A Police Scotland representative added: "We are aware of the death of a Scottish woman in Athens and are liaising with authorities in Greece. Officers are providing support to her family in Scotland."
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) stated: "Our thoughts are with Elizabeth's family during this difficult time. We are providing consular support and are in contact with the local authorities."
Other recent tragedies
The programme has sadly had to report on a number of tragic events recently. The day before, reporters informed viewers that an earthquake in south west Japan had claimed the lives of 13 people.
Jon Kay reported: "The country's prime minister said rescuers are now in a race against time. The magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit inland on Kyushu island at about half past four local time yesterday afternoon, causing power cuts and damage to buildings."
